Equivalence of foreign diplomas in the three communities of Belgium

Do you want to work or (continue to) study in Flanders with a foreign diploma? In certain cases, you have to apply for recognition of equivalence of your diploma. Where to apply depends on where in Belgium you will be working or studying.

There are three communities in Belgium (the Flemish Community, the French Community and the German-speaking Community), each of which recognises the equivalence of diplomas separately.

A recognition of equivalence issued by one of the three communities in Belgium (Flemish, French or German-speaking Community) is not valid in the other communities in Belgium, because there is no legal regulation providing for mutual recognition.

This means that employers can decide which community in Belgium you should apply to for recognition of your diploma.

French Community of Belgium

Do you have a foreign diploma and wish to work or study in the French Community of Belgium? If you need recognition of equivalence of your diploma, you must apply to the NARIC centre of the French Community.

German-speaking Community of Belgium

Do you have a foreign diploma and wish to work or study in the German-speaking Community of Belgium? If you need recognition of equivalence of your diploma, you must apply to the NARIC centre of the German-speaking Community.
