MOZES – Research on the Morphological Interaction between the Sea bottom and the Belgian Coastline: Working year 2

The MOZES‐project investigates the interaction between the Belgian offshore seabed and adjacent shoreline across various time scales to improve coastal management. Progress in four Work Packages (WP1, WP2, WP3, and WP4) during the second project year is summarized as follows: WP1: Further digitization of bathymetric and beach topographic data, and collection of bed sediment data. Analysis reveals structural erosion of the shoreface over the last four decades. Case studies confirm correlations between reported parameters and surveyed volume differences. WP2: Focus on developing the morphodynamic shelf model and the coupled morphostatic shelf-shoreline model. Significant advancements include simulating self-developing shoreface-connected sand ridges and reproducing observed shoreline progradation and erosion. New tide model shows wave-induced sediment transport dominance in the breaker zone. WP3: Investigates differences between simulated longshore sediment transport and sediment pathways over ridges. Results indicate wave-induced sediment transport dominance in the breaker zone, with no clear evidence of an onshore-directed component of residual sediment transport towards beaches. WP4: Model results using different synthetic bathymetries provide no clear evidence linking deeper channels or steeper shorefaces to increased beach erosion. Caution is advised in interpreting results due to the absence of 3D cross-shore processes in the models. Conclusion regarding the effect of channel deepening on beach erosion is not yet possible.
