Delineating important pollinator areas in Flanders (northern Belgium)
The strong and rapid decline of pollinators and other insects has recently drawn attention from both scientists and the media. The main threats to insects are habitat loss and fragmentation, pesticides, climate change and invasive species (such as the Yellow-legged hornet). To halt this decline, it is crucial to conserve and manage areas that are important for insects in general and for pollinators in particular. Using a recently published report on important European habitat types for pollinators (Kudrnovsky et al. 2020), we delineate potentially important areas for pollinators in Flanders.
